iEphemeris Pro App Reviews

Out of this World...

First class application ! Does exactly what it claims - in three beautifully presented screens. The language options are a real bonus and the ability to apply local GPS locations (iPhone 3G only) is really welcome. Top marks for execution, information, design and value for money...

Nicely Done!

For anyone interested in facts and information on the sun and moon and their various idiosyncrasies, this program is a must. Its well laid out in three information packed screens that provide a wealth of data. If I could mention only one omission that would be the various sunsets and rises; astronomical. Nautical and civil, this is great information for photographers (the Golden Hour!). Well worth the price.

Very Nice App!

Well done and worth the price. Really like that I can check sidereal time with this app! Would like to see the ability to be able to quickly change the dates so as to get a peek into the data pertinent for any day that I wish to check out. Helps in planning for astronomical observation sessions.

Crashed unrecoverably

I have a brand new iPod Touch running OS4.2. Id had the program for about 10 minutes, when I wanted to find out how to view the data for the next day, rather than for the current time. This app doesnt come with tutorials. I pressed the "i" button in the lower right. The button glowed white -- and then the entire screen went white, without any controls to press whatsoever. Despite numerous re-boots, re-synchs, and jabs at my touhscreen, the program continued to open to this white page of death. I wrote to Support -- and waited for a reply nearly 72 hours before writing this review. A waste.

Several bugs; wait for Version 1.1

This application gives the astronomical time in several different formats, the sun and moon position, and the time of sunrise and sunset. The user must enter their latitude and longitude manually, as no use is made of the iPhones location finding capability. No information is provided about the planets. Unfortunately Version 1.0 suffers from several significant bugs: 1) The letters for East and West longitude are not localized properly; in the English language version, O is used for West longitude instead of W. 2) The sidereal time is incorrect, and should be shown in 24-hour format regardless of the locale. 3) The sunset time should be shown in PM format in those locales that use a 12-hour clock. 4) On the Suns page, the quantity "axial tilt" should be called "Earths axial tilt", and should be given in degrees instead of radians. 5) The Suns ecliptic longitude should be given in degrees instead of radians. 6) The last part of the longitude for my location (approximately 118 degrees west) is cut off, so that the " W part is missing. This application shows great potential, but needs more work. Wait until Version 1.1, when hopefully most of the bugs will be fixed.

Good App, But...

This is a cool and informative little piece of software. I like the realtime stats and polished interface. There are just a few things that Id like to see resolved. -Sunrise/sunset times are in UTC, even if I set to local time in the preferences. -Speaking of preferences, you need to have a back button for each preference. If I go into, say, City, but I dont want to change anything, I have to click the text box, bring up the keyboard, and hit return to get back. Just a minor thing, but it takes away from the polished feel. -Description says location services are a feature, but version 1.2 isnt even out yet. -When I type a city, like Rochester, how do I know if I have the correct Rochester? There should really be a list of search results that come up, with countries and states attached. Also, itd be nice to have elevation data be set automatically when you pick a city. I have no idea how many feet above sea level I am at a given time. That is what the measurement is in, right? There are no units attached to that preference. Yeah, looks like a few flaws, but theres really nothing thats that big a deal. Well worth my two bucks.

Good, needs tweaks

I upgraded from lite, but there are a few things needed- many of which were addresses by the previous review. In addition Id like to see moonrise/set times, and replicate sunrise/set graphics on sun data page. App also will not let you return to main settings screen after entering data- only have the "done" button, which returns you to the app, but hitting the settings button again puts you back into the same data screen you just edited with again no way to get to other settings screens without quitting the app and restarting. Lastly, in regards to the W vs. O in setting lat & long., (mentioned in earlier review) in the USA we use W, so thats fine here. Overall good app, but I believe you could vastly improve it with some tuning and updating.

Good but

Its a very informative app but the time for sun rise and sun set is backwards. Its like they put the rite times with the wrong headings.

Great, worth the upgrade

I use the sunrise sunset times often for hunting and adjusting hiking schedules. Its great to know the moon phases as well for night outings.

Not bad. Needs work

If program can use gps why cant it pull date and time from the iPod?

Great

What I think would be cool or better as an updat is gradually adding planets, then the moons of planets. Maybe pictures of the planets you add too. A Also eclipse times and in what areas for the moon and sun.

Save your $$$

I hqave been patiently using this app from its earliest versions but it suffers from three major problems: 1 the author keeps breaking working features when he adds "new" features. 2 Poorly coded UI leads to illogical behavior in the prefs. 3 the authors Italian to English translations leave much to be desired. There are much better ephemeris apps out there. Try them instead!

Fantastic Program

Not sure what all the fuss and complaints are all about. Program is easy to understand and use. Folks with iPhone 3G should have NO complaints with setting it up as we have GPS. Just choose GPS ON and no worries where youre at. It will set up location values based on GPS. how much simpler can it be? I agree with a suggestion of possibly including the planets if possible in the future. Would be awesome for all including Astronomers. Tom

Way better than the lite version.

The main thing I would add is some technical documentation describing what all of the displays mean. I knew all but two. However a description of the equation of time and the other features would increase your audience base.

Meh.

This is a decent app, though more features would be nice. For one thing, moon phases should be clearer... i would be a lot better if it included more graphics than just full, new, 25%, 50%, and 75%. Then you could easily see when it will be a crescent, and so forth. It also could use a table of eclipses or something like that. The paid version really shouldnt be this "lite."

Why did they stop keeping it up-to-date?

About mid-November they stopped updating the app and the moon phases dont change now. Dont waste your money. They will cheat you out of $2.

Thanks

Upgraded from lite version. Very useful for night flights. Can you please add Moon transit time? Thanks again!

iEphemeris Pro moonrise/set problems

Today I noticed the times for moonrise/set were off by an hour. Two other apps gave the correct time. This is not acceptable. I am deleting this app. Version 1.7: the moonrise/set times are wrong. Now the App Store apparently wants more money just to upgrade to ver 1.9? I am deleting this app. Sun n Moon and MoonPhase give correct moonrise/set which I need for moonlight photography.

Update: new new fixed new broken

In my Feb 18, 2010 review of the then new version 1.7, I pointed out that the update had broken the picture of the sun that has always been on the Sun page. With this new new update, version 1.8, that bug is now fixed. Nice that it was fixed so fast but better to have never been broken in the first place -- suggest the author actually test his updates before posting them. Generally a good app though. One suggestion: add a graphic compass description of the position of sun and moon, as in the app "Sun n Moon".
